Installation guide

Hoardings are temporary walls used to separate building or fit-out work from surrounding public areas. In shops and shopping centres, they define the work area and provide a continuous face along the public side of a project.

The NXGN system uses timber framing, sheet materials, steel uprights and weight blocks to form freestanding hoardings. This guide covers two ways of building the wall: prefabricated panel hoardings and practical hoardings assembled on site.

Parts you will see in the drawings

The hoarding face is the surface that encloses the work area. A skin is the MDF or plywood sheet fixed to the timber frame, while studs are the vertical timber members behind it. Panel hoardings combine these into prefabricated units; practical hoardings bring them together on site.

Uprights are steel brackets fixed to the timber studs. Weight blocks sit on the upright feet and provide ballast for the freestanding arrangement. The upright drawings identify these components and show their fabrication and fixing details.

Doorways provide access through the hoarding. Returns and splays deal with changes in direction along its line. Each construction manual includes these details alongside the main wall assembly.

Reading the manuals

Start with the construction notes for your hoarding type, then follow the installation details in order. Read each drawing together with its accompanying text: the labels, dimensions and fixing references connect the illustrated parts to the written instructions.
