Practical Hoarding Construction Notes

• All Workmanship & Materials in accordance AS 4687:2022 - Hoardings & Temporary Fencing
• The hoarding installation practices outlined in this document are classified as an "internal temporary hoarding" as per AS4687:2022
• Dimensions are in Millimeters & Dimensions shall not be obtained by scaling hoarding drawings
• All hoardings shall be erected by a competent installer in accordance with this document
• Any time the hoarding is moved or altered it shall be done by a competent installer in accordance with this document
• Substitutions are only to be made with the approval of a Structural Engineer
• Hoardings are not designed for additional loading
• No items to be learnt against the hoarding at any time
• Timber to be free of any defects at joints
• Uprights to be free of any defects & cracks
• Weight Blocks per upright to be installed in accordance with NXGN Uprights Structural Drawings & Load Ratings

Practical Hoardings Detail

Practical Hoardings assembled entirely on-site.

Panel Skins (SK) can be either 9mm MDF or Plywood and all timber is 70 x 45mm MGP 10.

Uprights are installed at each Panel Skin (SK) join & Offset Uprights are installed where necessary.

Practical Hoardings - Upright Fixing Detail

Uprights are a mild steel bracket designed to hold up hoardings.

Weight Blocks are to be placed on the Upright Foot.

Upright Studs (UR ST) are constructed from 70 x 45 MGP 10 timber and will vary in height depending on the Panel Height (PH)

Uprights are secured to the Upright Studs (UR ST) through "Stud Fixing Holes" using 1x 35mm Chipboard Screw Top, Middle & Bottom.

NXGN Uprights - Offset Upright

Offsetting Uprights are required when/if:

• The Uprights Weights Block will affect the operation of the Doors.
• The Uprights Weights Block will extrude past the Hoarding.
• Other potential obstacles (pot plants, chairs, ATM's, etc).

Offsetting the uprights gives the installer the option to move the Upright within the Hoarding Panel to ensure the Weight Blocks are not visible to the public or a safety hazard.

Practical Hoarding Offset Uprights

Offsetting Uprights for Practical Hoardings is more simplistic, simply fix the Upright Stud (UR ST) where required.

Practical Hoardings - Doorways

To add Doorways in practical hoardings, you need to construct a Doorway Frame. Offset Uprights are required to allow for inward hinged door opening,

if Uprights are installed at the edge of the Panel Skin (SK), doors will not be able to fully open.

The Door Head Height (DHH) varies and is dependent on the height & width of the doors that are being hung (DOH)/(DOW) and the Panel Height (PH) .

• DHH = (Door Opening Height) - (Panel Height)

Door Construction

To achieve a flush finish with the hoarding face, 70 x 45mm Timber Packers are Glued & Fixed onto the back of the door, hinges are fixed to the Timber Packers & door hinges are fixed to the Door Opening Stud (DOST) using 35mm 10G Chipboard Screws.

Practical Hoardings - Doorway Frame

Doorway Frame is constructed from 70 x 45mm MGP10 Timber and has the following components:

• Door Head Top Plate (DHTP)
• Door Head Bottom Plate (DHBP)
• Door Head Studs (DHST)
• Door Opening Stud (DOST)

Sizes of the components will vary depending on the DOH & DOW.

Frame Fixings

• Door Head Top Plate & Door Head Bottom Plate (DHTP/DHBP)
• Fixed through the Upright Studs Left & Right of the Doorway (2x 65mm Chipboard Screws)
• Door Opening Studs (DOST)
• Fixed through the top of the Door Head Bottom Plate (2x 65mm Chipboard Screws)
• Door Head Studs (DHST)
• Fixed through the top of the DHTP & Underside of DHBP (2x 65mm Chipboard Screws)

Skin Fixings

Door Head Skins (DHSK) & Panel Skins (SK) are to be fixed using 35mm 10G Chipboard Screws

• Door Head Skins (DHSK) are fixed to the Door Head Studs (DHST) and Top & Bottom Plates (DHTP/DHBP) at 300 Centres
• Panel Skins (SK) either side of the Door Opening are fixed to the Door Opening Stud (DOST) and Door Head Studs (DHST) at 300 Centres

Practical Hoardings - Skin Fixing Specification

Panel Skins (SK) can be made from either 9mm MDF or Plywood, secured to the Upright Studs (UR ST) using 35mm 10G Chipboard Screws at 350mm Centres

Additional Studs can be placed to provide additional support for cases like Returns, Splays and Hoardings With No Returns and are fixed to the same specification as Upright Studs (UR ST).

Practical Hoardings - Returns

Return Panels (Returns) are typically at each end of a hoarding returning the hoarding back into the shop-front or construction site.To install Returns on Practical Hoardings:

1. install an Additional Stud on the edge of the Panel Skin (SK) you wish to return.
2. Fix Panel Skin (SK) to Additional Stud
3. Install Offset Upright.

Hoardings With No Returns

Hoardings without Return Panels require the installation of an additional Offset Upright to support the end of the Panel.

Practical Hoardings - Splays

Splay Hoardings are required for corner shopfronts or construction sites, achieved by Offsetting Uprights and installing an Additional Stud.

Fix Splays with 1x 10G 65mm Chipboard Screw through the Splay Overhang into the Additional Stud, Top Middle & Bottom.
